What is This?

There's a new structure being being adjacent to the city parking lot near Abalone Cove. Will it be a shelter or some type of interpretive area?

Heading Home

I ran in Long Beach today in preparation for the 1/2 marathon on October 11. This was my reward as I headed toward RPV from Long Beach.

Creeping Fog- Not Smoke!

It's very warm. A few miles closer to the ocean, though, the fog has hovered all day long. This morning I caught this shot of it creeping up the hill.

Fire at the Refinery

You could see the smoke from the refinery several miles away this morning.

Construction in RPV

Our neighbors are having something done to their house. This is how it looked last weekend. Stay tuned!

Book Group Table

Our book group discussed Water for Elephants, a book about the circus. For dessert, we had ice cream cones and lemonade. We nibbled on kettle corn during the discussion.

Golf Course at Terranea

You can see that the golf course at Terranea didn't experience any problems during our fire on August 27.

Backyard Surprise

This plant started growing a few months ago in a section of our side yard that had been landscaped in May. I didn't know what it was, but was pretty sure that it was a food crop-- cucumber, pumpkin, hard squash, or maybe just a gourd. It's gotten bigger and put out a lot of flowers. Yesterday I was just thinking about pulling it out today. It didn't seem like any of the flowers were setting. Lo and behold, I discovered that there were two melons-- probably cantaloupes-- growing on it. I had been expecting the flowers closest to the roots to set first. Obviously, I've been looking in the wrong place.

It's always a pleasure to hear the chimes ring at Wayfarers Chapel.

Burned Hillside

This hill was burned on Thursday, September 3-- about a week before I took the picture. (See my post for Friday, Sept. 4.) The fire was started when a teenager crashed his car at the bottom of the hill. It caught fire and would have caused a lot more damage if the Super Scooper had not been in the area to put it out quickly. A private K-12 school is at the top of the hill along with several homes. Fortunately, none of them were damaged.

Fishermen's Access

This is the view from the Point Vincente fishing access parking lot. Once the heat wave dissipated, we've had some lovely days.

Heading toward RPV

I was crossing the Vincent Thomas Bridge yesterday heading home when I noticed all of the clouds hanging over the hill. They didn't seem to keep the coastline from being sunny and pleasant though during my run.

Funny Insignia

This funny little symbol is on a trash can at the end of the road. I don't know if it's a commercial logo or someone's art work, but I like it.

Lone Pine Lake

You have to hike about 5.8 miles in the Sierra Nevada mountains to get to this lake. It's worth the effort.

September Eleven-- Remembrance Day

I saw a very large group of motorcyclists riding together today. I think that they were remembering the fallen ones from September 11, 2001.

Curious Bird

This bird perched on a tree on the side of Mount Whitney seemed curious about us.

No More Free T.V.

The switch over to h.d. television meant that we could no longer get free t.v. direct from San Diego. Now we have to pay for television for the first time in our lives.

Another Fire

There was a small brush fire this afternoon. It had just started as I was driving to our local post office. Fortunately, the super scooper plane dropped something on it very quickly so that it didn't spread up hill to homes or a lovely private school.

Remembering the Nisei Heroes

This is a portion of the memorial to the Nisei (U.S. born Japanese-American) citizens who served in the armed forces in WWII while in most cases their family members were in internment camps. It's located a short distance from the Japanese-American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles.

Ironic Sign, Important Question

I'm worried about what it means when this center, the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, is closed in the middle of the day. Does that mean that no one is trying to preserve democracy on this day?
