Night Hike

Each Thursday night between 20 and 80 people participate in the Sierra Club conditioning hikes.
This was part of our view tonight. These are some of the lights of Los Angeles as seen from the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Is It Safe?

I have to drive under this freeway overpass each day on my way to work. The work going on makes me wonder about my safety.

Experimental Bread

I've been making bread for more than forty years-- by hand, not by a bread machine. Last year I discovered a cookbook that had a new strategy for making artisan-type breads. This bread, a walnut raisin loaf, is ready to be baked. I use a cast-iron Dutch oven inside of my regular oven. It's a fun technique that makes a wonderfully chewy bread.

Distant Isles

Although this looks like a mountain range, the peaks in the background are some of the islands that are part of the Channel Islands National Park. Today, I could see Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands. I think some of the others are visible, too. Sunset is the best time of day to see this distant islands that are 60-70 miles away.

Reflection in Car Window

The Prius that I photographed earlier had this nice reflection of the palatial homes across the road. It has a funny license plate, too. I wonder what the story is behind it.

Transportation Contrasts

These cars, one a gas-guzzling Corvette and the other a hybrid Prius, were parked side by side overlooking the ocean and the Trump National Golf Course. I wonder if they belong to two different drivers from the same family.

Close-up of Santa Barbara

I can see the Channel Island National Park, especially the Island of Santa Barbara, mainly in the winter. It's quite far away from my patio here i Rancho Palos Verdes-- I think more than sixty-two miles. I love the way it looks at sunset.

January Sunset

The many storms of this winter have brought wonderful clouds and sunsets. I was home in time to see this scene from my bedroom window.

Epiphany Tradition

In 1997, we spent January 6, Epiphany, in Barcelona, Spain. Around midday we passed a bakery where many people were buying a festive bread. We, my husband and my daughter who was spending her junior year of college at the University of Barcelona, didn't know what was going on, but I bought a small loaf of the bread for us. Later, I learned that the bread is called by Mexicans, Rosca de Reyes. We're going to enjoy it here in Southern California-- far away from Espana!

The Last Day of 2010

We enjoyed a hike in Topanga Canyon State Park-- before the rains started again. We were trying to get to Eagle Rock, but the Musch trail was so muddy that it slowed us down.

It was hard to choose just one photo. I have several favorites. This one, though, of a new father caresses his newborn son seems most appropriate for the new year. Happy New Year, 2011. May this year bring much joy, peace, and love to all of us.
