Hikers

These people are part of the Sierra Club conditioning hikes that start at the parking lot near Silver Spur Rd. and Hawthorne Blvd.
There are 20-80 people who hike in four different speed groups each Thursday evening all year round.

Disney Hall and Emmy Party

This is how Walt Disney Hall (a concert venue) was illuminated for the Entertainment Tonight Emmy party. No, I didn't go. I was just driving by after attending a play.

Walking around Trump National Golf Course

There are public access paths around and adjacent to the Trump National Golf Course here in RPV. This pond attracts migratory birds at different times of the year.

Fireworks Finale

One of the last treats of summer is the Fireworks Finale at the Hollywood Bowl. This year the L.A. Philharmonic played Mozart, Bach, and Gershwin. The rest of the program was Brian Wilson and his band. There were a lot of old Beach Boys songs.

One of our Protectors

Many people like to bicycle up our twisting road, Palos Verdes Drive East. Still others choose to speed up this hill. Our local law enforcement tries to slow cars down by ticketing speeders on this road. I see this car and its officer almost every Saturday-- sometimes here where I photographed him and sometimes along Palos Verdes Drive South.

Warning Sign

Summer is almost over. Here in Los Angeles County that means the beginning of our worst fire season. So far our weather has been moist and cool. When it turns hot and dry, the brush of our hillsides becomes a real fire hazard-- hence this sign.

Stained Glass

This is the view of the front window of my church, the Rolling Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church. From the lower floor there is a view of the entire Los Angeles basin and the ocean near Redondo Beach. The church is in the City of Rolling Hills Estates, but our neighbors immediately to the west are in the city of Rancho Palos Verdes.

Point Vincente Interpretative Center

This building is reminiscent of a ship with its portholes. It houses a nice collection of natural and historical exhibits. It also is the base of a group of volunteers that counts whales migrating by.

Yes, they still exist!

As one of a small group of non-owners of cell phones, I often look to see if pay phones are still available. This one is in the lobby of our main library.

Do you have an ax?

The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is putting in a storm drain on Palos Verdes Drive South. Apparently, these trees were removed and the wood is free for the taking. You'd need a large truck and/or ax, though.

One more from Broadford, Isle of Skye, Scotland

During certain times of the year, I can see the squid fishing boats from my windows. My self-chosen sister city, Broadford, also has residents who support themselves from the sea.

Sister City Choice for Rancho Palos Verdes- Broadford, Scotland

Click here to view thumbnails for all participants
As far as I've been able to discover, we don't have a sister city. So I elect Broadford, Scotland on the Island of Skye. This small village, like my city, is on the water and filled with picturesque houses and interesting people. It also has a lively community of artists and craftsmen. Fishing is important there just like in our city. See tomorrow's picture.
